Saliqmiut Hotel Exterior Sign Project in Remote Tuktoyaktuk, Canada

Bringing Saliqmiut Hotel to Life in Tuktoyaktuk

When Saliqmiut Hotel, a newly developed hospitality destination in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, needed a high-quality illuminated exterior sign, we knew the project would require more than standard sign fabrication. The hotel needed a signage partner that could plan for long-distance transport, remote installation conditions, and the demands of a northern coastal environment.

Located along the Arctic coast near the Mackenzie River Delta, Tuktoyaktuk is one of Canada’s most remote communities. Transporting a large illuminated sign more than 3,300 kilometres from Edmonton required careful planning, durable fabrication, secure packaging, and installation-focused coordination.

At 3Sixty Sign Solutions, we worked closely with the client over several months to develop a custom exterior signage solution that could travel safely, simplify installation for local contractors, and support clear visibility for the new hotel. The completed illuminated building sign now helps Saliqmiut Hotel present a professional, recognisable presence in its remote northern location.

Saliqmiut Hotel

Saliqmiut Hotel is a newly established hospitality destination located in Tuktoyaktuk, an Inuvialuit hamlet in the Northwest Territories.

Designed to accommodate travellers, business visitors, and guests exploring Canada’s Arctic region, the hotel required a professional exterior sign that would reflect its brand while providing high visibility in a remote northern environment.

The client sought a durable, illuminated signage solution that would:

Building a Sign for One of Canada's Northernmost Hotels

The project involved designing, fabricating, packaging, and delivering a custom illuminated building sign for the hotel.

Materials and methods included:

Navigating Distance, Installation, and Transportation Obstacles

Challenge 1: Extreme Distance and Remote Location

A drive from Edmonton to Tuktoyaktuk covers approximately 3,367 kilometres and can take more than 40 hours. Because of that distance, even a small oversight in fabrication, packaging, wiring, or mounting could have created delays once the sign arrived on-site.

Challenge 2: Installation Logistics

The client initially preferred channel letters mounted directly to the building. However, that approach would have created additional installation challenges and possible wiring concerns within the structure.

We needed to develop an approach that preserved the desired look of the illuminated channel letter while making the final installation easier and more predictable for local contractors.

Challenge 3: Shipping and Protection

Transporting a fully illuminated sign over thousands of kilometres required careful protection. Damage during transit could have affected the construction schedule and created replacement challenges in a remote community with limited access to supplies and equipment.

The sign needed to arrive ready for installation, with the letters, wiring, mounting method, and protective packaging all considered before it left our facility.

Executing a Full-Service Signage Solution for Saliqmiut

Planning & Design

Over a three-month planning period, we collaborated closely with the client to evaluate installation options and identify the most practical solution for the location.

After reviewing the logistical realities of the project, the team recommended mounting the illuminated channel letters to a custom aluminium half-pan rather than installing individual letters directly onto the building. This approach simplified installation, reduced risk, and eliminated concerns about exposed interior wiring.

The goal was to give the client the clean, professional look of illuminated channel letters while making the sign easier to transport, align, and install in a remote northern community.

Permitting Made Easy

Because this project was located in a remote northern community, coordination and installation planning mattered just as much as fabrication. We focused on creating a sign system that aligned with the client’s construction schedule, site requirements, and installation conditions.

By addressing installation details early, we helped reduce the chance of field complications once the sign reached Tuktoyaktuk.

Fabrication

We fully fabricated and assembled the sign before shipment. The custom aluminium half-pan allowed the illuminated channel letters to be mounted and tested before leaving our facility.

We also fabricated a dedicated mounting bracket system to enable local installers to position and secure the sign more efficiently. This reduced the number of on-site decisions and made the installation process more straightforward.

Every component was reviewed before shipping, including the illuminated letters, mounting system, wiring approach, and final assembly.

Installation

To simplify installation, we provided a mounting system that allowed installers to secure the bracket and then hang the completed sign into place.

This approach reduced installation complexity and minimised the likelihood of field modifications. Once the sign arrived in Tuktoyaktuk, it was installed as intended, completing the hotel’s exterior branding.

What Made It Work

Several factors contributed to the project’s success:

One particularly important innovation was the custom-built shipping crate. The crate was engineered so the sign remained suspended in its natural installation position, preventing any part of the sign face or channel letters from touching the crate during transit. This provided maximum protection throughout the long journey north.

Results That Surpassed Project Expectations

Ahead of Schedule

Careful planning and pre-assembly minimised installation time and helped ensure the project progressed smoothly once the sign arrived on-site. This facilitated a smoother installation process and helped the project progress within the client’s construction schedule.

Exceeded Expectations

The sign reached Tuktoyaktuk without damage and was installed successfully. The client received a durable illuminated exterior sign that reflected the hotel’s brand and provided clear visibility for guests arriving at the property.

New Opportunities

The success of the exterior signage project led to additional work with Saliqmiut Hotel. We are now collaborating with the client on a series of custom interior wayfinding signs designed for the property’s needs.

Future Advantage

This project gave us a proven process for supporting signage projects in remote northern communities. It also reinforced the importance of installation planning, packaging design, and pre-assembly when a project site is difficult to access.

The successful completion of this project demonstrates 3Sixty Sign Solutions’ ability to manage complex logistics, extreme environmental conditions, and specialised installation requirements without compromising quality.
